Our Cultural Practices
Aloha!
The ‘Ilima Hotel believes in the importance of connecting hosts, guests and place in order to create a true appreciation for the Hawaiian culture and its primal role in the visitor experience on our islands. The ‘Ilima Hotel staff, or hosts as they are officially called, receive regular instruction in the Hawaiian values of ho’okipa (hospitality), lokahi (unity of purpose) and laulima (working together) through a series of cultural classes called Mohalapua ‘o ‘Ilima (The blossoming ‘Ilima flower). The name has a double meaning: In Hawai’i pua means flower but also, poetically, child. Hosts blossom mentally and spiritually like a flower but are also children of the land. We believe it is our kuleana (responsibility) to perpetuate and impart this knowledge to our family, friends and guests. Our vision, values and host characteristics guide our actions.
On this page you will find links to the various cultural experiences enjoyed by our hosts. We invite you to join us for any activity of Moahalapua o ‘Ilima that may be happening during your stay at the hotel. We want you to enjoy your time in the islands and depart with a deeper appreciation of the host culture that makes Hawai’i the special place that it is.
The ‘Ilima hosts also celebrate the culture though music. The ‘Ilima ‘Ohana Chorus performs Hawaiian songs every Friday at 11:30 AM in the lobby and guests are invited to sing along.
