Mohalapua O Ilima

Mohalapua classes cover all aspects of Hawaiian culture, history and language ranging from the theoretical to the practical with lectures on medicinal plants, marine life and Hawaiian language along with hands-on instruction in lei making and decorative weaving. The hosts are also given the opportunity to participate in field trips to locations of significance on the island including ‘Iolani Palace, the Queen Emma Summer Palace and the Bishop Museum.

The hosts are also active in perpetuating the Hawaiian culture and recently completed two feather kahili or royal standards that were used in the official rededication of the Royal Hawaiian Center, location of the former home of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop founder of the Kamehameha Schools. These kahili, called Na Lima Aloha (Loving Hands) and Na Pu’uwai Malama (Caring Hearts), stand proudly in our lobby and bear the names of all those who participated in their creation.
